Movement

Our bodies are meant to be used—get moving.

Physical activity does not mean becoming a CrossFit champion, running ultramarathons, or exercising intensely every single day. A useful clinical concept we employ is the MET, or metabolic equivalent of task, which allows us to quantify physical activity in a standardized way. We use this metric to establish a baseline level of movement and then take a systematic, sustainable approach toward optimization.

Moving your body also does not require a gym membership. It can be daily brisk walks in a favorite park, joining a pickleball league, gardening, dancing, or a standing weekly pickup basketball game with friends. The guiding principle is to choose movement that you enjoy and can realistically integrate into your life. Exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve sleep, enhance cognitive function, and increase overall resilience. When approached thoughtfully, it becomes a powerful and sustainable mental health intervention.

Interestingly, there can be such a thing as too much exercise. Excessive or compulsive physical activity can lead to burnout, injury, or even worsening mental health. The goal is not maximal exertion but optimal engagement.
